which direction the Dow will be heading on any given day. Of course, economists can clearly see trends and make an intelligent prediction on which way the U.S. economy is
headed. Today, with the Internet and CNN, along with a host of news programming, the public is often well aware of how the economy is doing. Black Friday--the day after
Thanksgiving-- is the day everyone goes out and shows America how fat their wallets are or how much credit they have as they begin their Christmas shopping. Results are reported
on the news and analysts base much commentary on the days events. Other economists look at broader, more long term trends which are woven into the fabric of society as
a whole, encompassing everything from class stratification to unemployment trends and industry changes. They look at how the society is doing at present and where it is headed, as well
as glimpsing the stock market, exchange rates and technological change. Everything seems to impact the future economy. Along with economic indicators and variables, an important consideration in economics is the
political climate. For example, the United Statess capitalist system has been applauded, emulated, and regarded as best of all government alternatives. And while the United States has fared better than
most--actually all, as few dispute its dominance-- there are critics of capitalism. There are flaws, such as the fact that America is not quite sure what to do with its
poor. And this inspires criticism. One economist, Lester Thurow, has been in the midst of controversy with several books and articles that lean clearly to the left but sometimes
