which society was composed of seven constants: subsistence, government, language, family, religion, architecture and property. He adopted a materialistic approach, in which changes within a society were always associated with
technological developments, and based his theories of human evolution on the varying uses of tools and subsistence. His basic premise, with regard to his seven constants, was that these were
invariably interlinked and had been in existence from the earliest days of humanity: the changes which had taken place were therefore the result of continuous evolution and refinement of the
constants, not the introduction of new ones. He
argued that it was possible to extrapolate information relating to each of the seven from studying one of them: architecture, for example, would yield information on family structures and kinship
systems. According to Morgans model, therefore, it would not be possible to pinpoint an "origin" of religion, since it is assumed that it grew as an integral part of societal
systems right from their earliest formation alongside the other definitive aspects of social culture.
Tylor asserts that in order to assess a culture, one must approach it from an objective standpoint: if one does not do so, ones own personal bias
will prevent an accurate observation from being made. Therefore, if one is studying the religion of a culture which is not Christian, one must avoid imposing narrow Christian doctrines upon
