A 5 page paper examining the statement, “Scholars have suggested the West afforded greater educational and employment opportunities for women of color.” It can be argued that this is true, but only in relative terms. The West did – and does – offer more opportunities for women of color in many ways relative to those opportunities available in much of the Eastern Hemisphere. The reasons, however, likely have more to do with more developed economies in the West and more opportunity being available in general. The experiences of Era Bell Thompson, Fabiola Cabeza and the fictional Lalu Nathoy illustrate the point. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

"Scholars have suggested the West afforded greater educational and employment opportunities for women of color." It can be argued that this is true, but only in relative terms.
The West did - and does - offer more opportunities for women of color in many ways relative to those opportunities available in much of the Eastern Hemisphere. The
reasons, however, likely have more to do with more developed economies in the West and more opportunity being available in general. The experiences of Era Bell Thompson, Fabiola Cabeza
and the fictional Lalu Nathoy illustrate the point. Era Bell Thompson Being black in America in the early years of the 20th century
automatically put individuals at a disadvantage. "People" - meaning white people of northern European descent - were never certain of what to do with the African American portion of
the population. There was intense discrimination against the entire race in the South, but life in the North generally was no better. In either region, black people were
discriminated against and held in low-level jobs where there was little opportunity for advancement or assumption of greater responsibility. Educational opportunities were limited as well, both in free public
school systems and particularly in the realm of higher education at a time when only those with financial means were able to attend college.
There was a difference in the North and South in the early years of the 20th century, but not that which is normally recognized. In the South, discrimination
