on the list is from Kidshealth.org and provides the necessary general background. Here we learn that Down syndrome (DS) is a condition caused by the presence of extra genetic material
in the child (Scott, 2008). Normally, a developing embryo has 46 chromosomes; 23 from the mother and 23 from the father (Scott, 2008). A Down syndrome baby has 47-somehow, it
inherits an extra chromosome 21 (Scott, 2008). The risk for a Down syndrome infant rises with the age of the mother, from 1 in 900 at age 30; to 1
in 350 if the mother is 35; and finally for a women of 40, the risk is about 1 in 100 (Scott, 2008). This means that the condition cannot be
called rare; its probably better to say that while it is not routine, it is also not unusual. Scott discusses the physical features of Down syndrome children; their learning
ability; susceptibility to disease and other medical problems, many of them serious or life-threatening; screening for the disease; and so on. In other words, the material available on Down syndrome
is extensive and wide-ranging, so that there seems no reason to try and pick articles that all address the same subject within the broad context of the condition itself.
