A number of studies have been conducted to study the impact of leadership and structural changes in the healthcare environment and in nursing systems. Williams and Ewell (1996), in their article Medical Staff Leadership: A National Panel Survey, assess the views of hospital medical staff regarding the need for creative leadership in the midst of significant change. Fonville (1998) in Developing New Nurse Leaders also considers the issue of shifts in leadership and governance, with a focus on the role of nurses. Similarly, Havens (1998) also considers the role of nursing leadership, with a particular focus on hospital governance. All of these studies reflect empirical studies of hospital populations in an effort to determine how changes in the healthcare environment have impacted individual roles.
