This concurrent approach to project work may offer some advantages but it may also be seen as having some inherent disadvantages when compared with dedicated single project approaches. The
way projects are managed has changed as a result of technology; this is an enabler and aid with many aspects of project management, including communications between remote team members. It
may be argued that with increased speed and the facilitation of project management through technological tools it becomes increasingly possible for an employee to participate in more than one project
at any time. The ability to take part in more than one project may be seen as increasing the overall level of productivity; an employee is achieving more in the
same time. In an age where there may be the need for specialist skills and/or knowledge that needs to be brought in from outside firms that specialise in supplying
an outsourcing argument may be used. If a firm has to gain a resource for themselves, for example hiring a specialist engineer for a single project, the cost may be
prohibitive; finding and negotiating contracts for the single project. Firms that are able pool resources and outsource them offer a range of advantages; this includes a potentially higher level of
expertise than the firm would have been able to gain alone. A key element of this service is for the outsourcing firm to benefit from offering services to a number
of firms and gaining from the economies of scope and scale. This allows a firm to benefit from only part of a specialist work time, sharing it with other employers
