question of whether lies can be noble was first addressed by Plato himself. Plato contended that some lies operate in consideration of the overall good of society. The contentions that "all persons are created equal" and "the majority is always right" are just two examples of societal contentions that are considered lies by some yet they are lies that operate to promote the better societal good. We must ask, however, does Platos use of the concept of the so-called noble lie in Book 3 of the Republic (414b) mean that he supported the use of lies as they might occur in political propaganda? Do other philosophers support such a use? The answer is yes, and yes. John Stewart Mills utilitarian approach is just one of the philosophies through which the concept of the "noble lie" could be justified. Not only do other philosophers support such a use, common sense tells us that in some situations a "noble lie" serves the greater good much better than the cold harsh truth. Consider, for example, a child whose favorite pet is killed by a car while the child is in school. The parent has three options in such a case: 1. They can tell the child what happened. 2. They can pretend that they dont know what happened. 3. They can lie about what happened and, perhaps, tell the child that the pet found a friend and they had gone on a long trip together. In either of the last two incidents the parent would, in effect, be utilizing the concept of the "noble lie".
