Londoners-not forgetting the dog-who decide to take a boating holiday on the Thames. This paper discusses some of the themes of the novel. Discussion The novel was a
huge success with the public, although critics lambasted it because it used a new sort of humor, a whimsical and colloquial method of writing that had never been seen before
(Harvey xix). But its good natured approach to the sometimes silly way humans act is precisely what makes it such fun. The narrator of the book, known only as
"J", and his friends George and William Samuel Harris (not to mention the dog, Montmorency) decide to take a weeks holiday on the Thames. They decide upon this venture
one evening when theyre sitting around talking, and discover that they all feel physically ill. The illnesses that they suffer can be traced to boredom and a general dislike
of work, which has apparently plagued the narrator all his life. Like most people, "J" develops the symptoms of whatever medical journal hes reading at the time, and upon
looking through a liver-pill circular, he finds that he has the symptoms of liver disease, "the chief among them being a general disinclination to work of any kind" (Jerome 3).
"J" tells his readers that he doesnt know why he should be made to suffer so, but he has been a martyr to the disease from earliest infancy (Jerome
3). His family however didnt realize that he had an ailment: "Medical science was in a far less advanced state than now, and they used to put it
down to laziness" (Jerome 3). The amazing thing about it, he relates, is that they used to clump him on the head rather than giving him liver pills and
