Hills (2000) argues that the most difficult thing about groupware implementation is people, where there is cost cutting and an insecure environment and groupware is introduced as away of increasing productivity there is unlikely to be success, in order for groupware to be successful the employees need to accept and use it. This will not happen where they are feeling insecure. The key to the successful use of groupware is the concept of sharing, if employees feel different than honest likely to participate actively in any activities which require sharing, especially if it may put their own job under threat. Furthermore, Hills (2000) notes that sharing in a workplace environment can be problematic due to the culture competitive environment found in many corporations. As children everybody learns how to share, but as individuals grow up a little so message that sharing is cheating, so the practice becomes less instinctual, especially if they have been operating under an autocratic style of management will have become used to an environment where knowledge, and the gathering of knowledge, may be seen as power (Hills, 2000). Therefore, one of the first considerations in undertaking a groupware installation and then utilizing a group is the human element and overcoming the resistance that will be present. Employees may need to read a concept of sharing, and management needs to support. The culture needs to be adapted in order to accept and support collaboration, this may mean structural changes within the organization to support teamwork as well as increasing the level of empowerment.
