This is a 7 page study of multi-generation alcohol abuse in relation to a client case study. The client in this case study is affected by many stress agents which have been consistent throughout her 28 years of life. The single female client still lives at home with her family in a conservative religious household which has been dominated by her overbearing father who is a second generation alcoholic within his own history. The father smokes excessively with little consideration to others in the household. The client who is affected by second hand smoke nevertheless smokes marijuana herself and in a sense is the third generation of substance abuse. The family home remains cluttered and although they are aware of their daughter’s problems handling the home environment and her stress levels, they are not likely to change their situation.

home environment and her stress levels, they are not likely to change their situation. While alcoholism can be seen as the prevalent
reason behind many of the clients stresses, unfortunately it differs from a great many other diseases in that the development of alcoholism and other substance abuse can actually develop slowly
over a persons life and has more than one known cause. Heredity, culture, economics and the environment are all considered elements which contribute to the cause of alcohol and substance
abuse and in this clients case all factors may have contributed (Vaillant and Hiller-Sturmhofel, 1996). In regards to heredity, the client has come from two generations of alcoholics already and
may be already susceptible to the disease and to other types of substance abuse as seen with her marijuana use. Her religious culture could also been seen as a contributing
factor to her current stress as her religion is conservative in its nature with the father being the authoritative figure in the household. If the client were to question her
fathers authority, then this would cause her additional stress in that she would be alienating herself from her familys culture. If the client were not to question her fathers authority
