(native of Morocco) middle-aged military commander who was trying to achieve respectability in white Venetian society. He recently eloped with the much-younger Desdemona, the only daughter of respected Senator
Brabantio, and had decided to promote Lt. Michael Cassio as his second-in-command over the veteran Iago. Othello has spent more time on the battlefield than he has in civilized
society, and is like a babe in the woods, suffering through a difficult period of adjustment. He is much more comfortable in military situations he is able to control
and is a na?ve man for whom seeing is believing. This plot provides Shakespeare with three contrasting ideas - order vs. chaos, appearances vs. reality, and light vs. dark
