that it is difficult to teach students with diverse needs if the teachers have to conform to a curriculum that has a set game plan in a particular time frame.
Throughout the piece, the author elaborates on different problems posed but such standardization. While contending that it is wrong, the author also throws up her hands and suggests that it
is inevitable. Tomlison writes: "Confronted by too many students, a schedule without breaks, a pile of papers that regenerates daily, and incessant demands from every educational stakeholder, no wonder we
become habitual and standardized in our practices" (11). In some ways the author makes a good point and backs it up with information and anecdotes. Yet, the authors point
is missed as there are few, if any, solutions provided. If education is so out of control, then why allow standardized practices to prevail? Still, the article does provide a
good overview of what education is like today and where the problems lie. There are of course portions of the piece where the author does provide a sense of what
is good about education and duly notes that when time allows, teachers do differentiate, thus giving individualized attention to needy students. Harris, Douglas E, and Carr, Judy
