a "monopoly" on the software industry, but although it certainly exerts dominance over the market, this assertion is not entirely accurate. However, if one looks at the history Microsoft, it
is evident that the companys progress over the years has, up to now, made it very difficult for rival such as Linux to gain a serious foothold in the market.
Even though rival firms had the capacity to produce commodities equivalent to Microsofts, and in some cases products which might even be superior, they were pushed to the edge of
the market in several ways. Firstly, the way in which Microsoft dominated
the public eye in terms of publicity and the prevalence of its product meant that the company name was becoming synonymous with OSs generally. The majority of new customers, especially
those who were not particularly experienced in computer technology, would not enquire as to whether there were alternative OSs, and in any case most systems manufacturers were obliged to include
Microsofts products because of the fees levied if they did not. Secondly, because of their superior solvency, Microsoft could afford to undercut their competitors in terms of price and free
offers. In addition, whether or not the company has achieved an unfair share
of the market, it is obvious that its products have been found by many customers to be eminently satisfactory, and Microsoft would no doubt argue that this is the main
reason for its success: that even with a level playing field with regard to the competition, other manufacturers would not be able to compete in terms of quality and new
