There was a time when working in "security" could translate to lack of education, lack of motivation or lack of nearly anything else positive. Such is not the case in todays business environment, however. We have come to be fully reliant on the electronic media on which business runs today. Security engineers continually enhance encryption codes, for those trying to break those codes progressively improve their abilities through practice. Trojan horse viruses invade in the background and quietly collect - and send to thieves - personal information used to commit identity theft. Spyware arrives in a variety of ways to track individuals online activities, including where they bank and how they access their accounts. Web page publisher software invites hackers in (Delio, 2000); background check companies suffer security breaches (Northam, 2005). Recently, Novell was used to unwittingly supply identity-gathering services for an online gaming business (Vijayan, 2005). How It Works It used to be enough to run virus scans and to guard against opening suspicious emails - though it can be difficult to determine what constitutes a "suspicious" email without opening it - but today greater connectivity brings more potential means of unauthorized access to personal information. When an analyst with Xato Network Security notified Microsoft that its "Front Page" web publishing software contained a "hole" making it vulnerable to hackers, Microsofts reply was to please keep the news quiet until the company could supply a fix in the form of a service pack rather than making an announcement of the softwares built-in vulnerability.
