using computer writing/typing programs to help students with functional language disorders to improve their language processing and writing skills. Perhaps one of the most notable uses of technology
to enhance the lives of children with severe and profound disabilities is the use of Touch Talkers and other augmentative communication devices to help children who are non-verbal communicate their
needs to others. Many special education teachers have found success in using these support devices and this provides support for children without verbal capabilities function in other classrooms, as
well as during leisure activities. Engaging Parents Engaging parents in the educational process is an important aspect of the role of special educators. Parents often know better
than anyone else what their children need and how their children can function in an educational setting. Encouraging parents to become advocates for their children can be a powerful
tool in determining change. For example, some schools are still limited in their accessibility for children in wheelchairs. Parents of these children may have to become involved on
a civic level to request, require and demand accessibility to all areas of a school for their child. In addition, parents can also become an active part of the
classroom process, supporting their children through the PET (Pupil Evaluation Team) process. In order to do this effectively, parents must be willing to educate themselves about their childrens needs
and the function of the classroom. Supporting parents in these areas can promote a positive relationship between educators and parents. Major Challenges in Special Education One of
