reaching within and not covering up anything anymore. The poem above all is about uncovering secrets. The poem does appear to be a comment of some type of the "elephant
in the living room" analogy often used in contemporary society; it is particularly used at AA meetings when describing something which should be obvious, but is ignored. For too long
Hayden may have ignored his fathers wrath. But what is the poem really saying? Each of the three stanzas is rather telling. The first, which begins "Sundays too my
father got up early" is at first confusing. It is almost a play on words as ones first thought is that the author and his father awoke early on
Sunday. But as the poem unfolds, one learns that the father awoke early on that day probably because the rest of the time he had to get up early in
order to go to work. The first stanza in fact emphasizes the fathers overworked state. Phrases such as "with cracked hands that ached" and others provide depth of information. In
fact, the brilliance of this poem is the ability to provide the reader with much more information than one can imagine in the space of just four or five lines.
The use of alliteration is perhaps most apparent in the initial stanza where the term "blueblack" and "blaze" are used. The rhythm is quick and the poem begins abruptly. The
reader is suddenly in this mans bedroom awaiting the sound of his fathers voice, waiting for the dismal Sunday to begin. In terms of assonance, throughout the work the author
uses the "o" sound quite frequently. Words used in the first part of the work are too, got, cold, etc. which does probably have an impact on the rhythm
