upon himself to seek a sort of solitude in the woods, in the hopes of finding a sense of enlightenment. He wishes to shed himself of all his material worries
and obligations, and simply get down to the basics in life and thus know himself, and perhaps humanity, better. The following paper first discusses Thoreaus attention to detail, and then
discusses his use of language. The portion on his use of language examines one chapter in particular, chapter 2. The paper then examines his formation of chapters. Attention
to Detail First and foremost, when we consider that Thoreau was writing this work about his experiences concerning his development through his solitude we cannot but assume that the work
will present the reader with a great amount of detail. Without paying attention to the little things Thoreau did not feel that he could honestly seek the sort of enlightenment
he was after. For example, if we wish to sit quietly and ponder the universe, so to speak, we must pay attention to the details of that silence, as well
as the details that surround us. We may see ants go by and they may inspire us in some way. This is an important detail in such a state of
silence and contemplation and it was just this sort of thing that Thoreau was seeking and thus details are an intricate part of his work. With that in mind we
examine how he focuses on detail and the methods he uses to further illustrate these details. Thoreau first tells us that he does not desire to burden us with
details about his economic concerns, but that he was asked so often about them that he felt it necessary to illustrate them. We see this in the following lines from
