Discussion By its very nature-the experiences of a man who has gone to live entirely alone-the book has a certain melancholy quality. Thoreau kept busy with a surprising variety of physical activities such as building his cabin, but the lifestyle he chose also left him a great deal of time for introspection. When a person sits down to examine their life its not unusual that loss is part of that examination. Thoreau explores the idea of loss, in this case impermanence, as he discusses his attempts to find a place to build his house. He writes that in his imagination, he evaluated and then bought every farm in the vicinity; also in his imagination he "walked over each farmers premises, tasted his wild apples, discoursed on husbandry with him, too his farm at his price ... cultivated it, ... and withdrew when I had enjoyed it long enough" (Thoreau 59). Thus his reflection on his need to build a house is touched with the idea of loss, since each time he buys a farm, he leaves it again. The idea of loss occurs again in the chapter Thoreau calls "Reading," in which he discusses the great literary works of the past. He says that literature in the Middle Ages was written in Latin and Greek, but not the Latin and Greek that were spoken; rather, they were written in "the select language of literature" (Thoreau 73). The average man had not learned "the nobler dialects of Greece and Rome," and they "prized ... a cheap contemporary literature" (Thoreau 73).
