how "the earth was not simply put here for human use--our own survival, our own flourishing as a species would depend on how we treated the earth" (McGregor, 2000), the
author aligns his theme with the fundamental component of Thoreaus reason for penning Walden. Walden Woods is where Thoreau first created his doctrine
of simplicity whereby he was able to escape the uncivilized nature of society his nature loving heart had come to loathe. Thinking his human counterparts both barbaric and brutal
in the way they disregarded the delicate composition of surrounding environment as well as the atrocities they brought about by their own doing, Thoreau equated mankinds social ills with the
indifference shown the precious natural world. He therefore retreated to Walden as a way to revive his own spirit and distance himself from what was ostensibly a civilized society,
ultimately finding how solitude became one of his closest friends. "I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even
with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude" (Thoreau, 1924, p. 94).
