Nagel begins his essay "Moral Luck" with a quote from Kant in which the great German philosopher extols the virtue of good will. In this quote, Kant argues that
good will is not good due any actions on the part of the individual who harbors this sentiment, but is good in and of itself. Nagel points out that the
Kant implies that the same thing is true of bad will, that is, whether or not bad will is successful in accomplishing an evil purpose is irrelevant to the morality
of harboring sentiments of bad will. According to Kant, if a course of action turns out to have beneficial results, this result does not justify the fact that the action
was initiated due to bad will. At this point, Nagel states his thesis, which is that this point of view on the part of Kant appears to be wrong because
of a basic problem that has to do with moral responsibility, a problem to which there is no identifiable solution that is completely satisfactory. Nagel goes on to identify
this problem, saying that it is related to an intuitive understanding among people that individuals should not be judged to be morally responsible for events that result due to factors
that are beyond their control. In other words, there are factors that affect the way in which an event is evaluated morally that are not affected by the Kantian idea
of good or bad will. The examples that Nagel offers at this point in this essay serve to define what he means by the concept of moral luck. For
instance, whether or not a reckless driving is considered to be a simple case of reckless driving or manslaughter is dependent on the whether or not there was a pedestrian
