to a good society from all aspects. As it notes in the introduction, written by Henry Morley, of this work, "It is the work of a scholarly and
witty Englishman, who attacks in his own way the chief political and social evils of his time." The following paper takes a passage from this work and analyzes what it
says about political/social/religious aspects of the time. Thomas Mores Utopia The passage to be examined comes from the section titled Of the
Religions of the Utopians in Mores work. In this section one sees more of the society than just the religious ideals of the people. In one line, for example, it
is noted that, "When the Utopians engage in battle, the priests who accompany them to the war...kneel down during the action (in a place not far from the field), and,
lifting up their hands to heaven, pray, first for peace, and then for victory to their own side" (More). They pray that not much blood will be spilled and they
ultimately treat the defeated very well, all of which leads to many nations revering them. In this one sees how, politically, they
rely on hopes and prayers for peace. If battle is necessary then they do whatever is necessary to make the battle as quick and painless as possible. There is clearly
the element of religion within this political system, and this religious ideal, coupled with the priests, makes other nations revere them and respect them. It is a powerful political stance
and one that, in the words of More, clearly demonstrates the necessity for war at times, but also the just treatment of others. This is clearly not something England, or
