it is usually added that he was not considered a great writer of any genre. (DeFord 5) During his lifetime, and for about 50 years after his death, his work
was grossly overrated causing him to receive a great deal of unwarranted adulation. (5) This adulation was undoubtedly enhanced by his Irish wit, charm, liberalism, and singing voice. Also, these
characteristics caused him to be one of Byrons closest friends. (Abrams 592) However, since that time his work has been underrated and unduly neglected. Most well-read people today dont
recognize his name at all, or confuse him with Sir Thomas More. This is ironic since, at least during his own lifetime, Moore was literally world famous as a poet
and a lyricist. Some of his songs such as "Believe me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms" are still sung; although, the mostly likely place to hear them performed these
days would perhaps be in a movie in order to set the proper tone for a historical setting. An examination of Moores work reveals that he was an
authentic, if minor, lyrical poet. (DeFord) His satire was almost on a par with that of Jonathan Swift; also, within the standards of his day, he was a noteworthy
biographer. (5) It can also be argued that Moore had an influence on his contemporaries in the Romantic Era. Even though he spent the majority of his adult life
in England, Moore was always thought of as an Irish poet. As such, he was definitely one of the first of that brilliant band of Irish writers that so instrumental
