The concept of just how related politics should be to religion has been one that has occupied the minds of the greatest thinkers of this country
since its inception. In the earliest history of our country, indeed even in the formative years before the infamous Declaration of Independence, politics and religion went hand in hand.
Religion was an important element in the Americas from the time of initial European arrival through the early Republic. It was a critical element in particular for Thomas
Jefferson and several other key leaders. That fact is clearly reflected in the struggle to establish our country as one that would survive into perpetuity. While religion fueled
our minds and hearts, there had to be limitations on just how much it could fuel our politics. Thanks to the efforts of
men like Jefferson, the United States was founded on several basic premises. These premises included the right of the people to worship as they wished, equality of the people,
and the right of the common citizen to participate in the affairs of government. Our founding fathers wanted the freedom to live their lives as they thought best for
