Thomas Jefferson is remembered as a staunch advocate of the concept of equality between men. In practice, however, Jefferson did many things
which contradicted the very principles of equality that he espoused. Jefferson, for example, was a slave owner himself (Sinclaire, 1995). In Jeffersons time it was practically unheard of
for a slave to buy his or her freedom in the United States, it was even more impossible for the ex-slave to achieve any type of societal equality with the
slave owner (Sinclaire, 1995). The issues surrounding slavery were in actuality in black and white. Blacks were simply not allowed the same rights as were whites and even
though men like Jefferson toyed with the concepts of equality they did not practice those concepts in all of their day to day affairs. While slavery was an issue
of black and white, however, there were many more injustices associated with this time period which were more insidious in their nature. One of these was the way that
Native Americans and issues such as land ownership were regarded. Here too, Jefferson wavered considerably from his professed belief in the ideology of true equality.
Interestingly, both slavery and our early relations with Native Americans had an integral connection to the capitalist economic system which prevailed in this so-called "New World". Capitalistic
premises include private ownership of land and other property, free enterprise, and freedom of choice. Capitalism is not strictly a modern phenomenon. Instead, it has been in place
in one form or another, in one location or another, since ancient times. In most regions where capitalism was practiced so too was slavery and so too was there
