His contributions to America alone are indeed phenomenal. Jefferson is not just one of our founding fathers but is to many the embodiment of such concepts as freedom,
justice, and equality (Hayes, 2008). Jefferson, after all, penned the now infamous words "all men were created equal" (Hayes, 2008). While Jefferson is remembered for some of the
greatest premises of mankind, however, his actions often were a contradiction to those premises. Some historians have even described Jefferson as the quintessential conflicted American. Some have even
asserted that the quality of being contradictory is actually an American trait! One of the greatest contradictions presented by Jeffersons actions when contrasted
to the premises he is assumed as having held most dear is the fact that he owned slaves! It is important to remember, however, the time during which Jefferson
lived. Slavery was an important institution in its time. This was true not just in the young United States but in many locations throughout the world. While
in most areas of the world slavery was abolished much earlier in time than in the U.S., in the U.S. both the issues surrounding slavery and indigenous rights lasted
long past the time where such mindsets were becoming extinct in other regions of the world. This was true because in effect this was indeed a new land and a
land that would have to have extraordinary resources devoted to it if it were to ever be groomed to the point that it was comparable to the lands the founding
