dynamic, technically more original and ingenious, and philosophically more uncompromising" (Dauner 358). Although, unlike his contemporaries, Hardy continued to pen poetry into the first quarter of the twentieth century,
he never deviated from his preferred form or content (Dauner 358). He remained forever true to his steadfastly individualistic approach to his art (Dauner 358). Hardy has become
known as "one of the most autobiographical of poets" (Dauner 358). He would carry with him notebooks into which he would scribble anything from the most casual observation to
an intensely personal introspection on love and life (Dauner 358). Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840 in Egdon Heath, in Dorset County, England, which later became known as
Wessex in Hardys novels and (Thomas Hardy). He came from working-class stock, a fact that seemed to embarrass him to the point that he took great pains to hide
it in later life. His father was a mason, and it was expected that his son would apprentice to learn the trade as well (Thomas Hardy). However, Hardy
was very much his mothers son, and shared her love of Latin poetry (Thomas Hardy). From adolescence onward, Hardy immersed himself in books and delighted in writing pastoral verses
that tended to idealize "the rural life" (Thomas Hardy). After completing his education in Dorchester, he became an architects apprentices and secured employment at a firm that was involved
