The Voyage of Life, and gives some brief information about the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School The Hudson River School is the name given to
American landscape painters who worked during the period 1825-1875 (Lofgren, 2004). The Hudson River School "is really the first coherent school of American art and helped shape the mythos
of the American landscape" (Lofgren, 2004). Thomas Cole is the founder of this school and a key figure in its development; landscape painting "became the prevalent genre of 19th
century painting" (Lofgren, 2004). American paints were studying abroad at the time, "absorbing much of the romantic aesthetic of the European painters" (Lofgren, 2004). When they returned
home, they applied that romantic vision to American landscapes. "These artists were particularly attracted by the grandeur of Niagara Falls and the scenic beauty of the Hudson River valley,
the Catskills, and the White Mountains" (Lofgren, 2004). Thus the school was established and took its name from the area where these painters worked. Something else happened as
well: although the human figures in these paintings were "insignificant," the landscapes were "more beautiful than fearsome" (Lofgren, 2004). The Voyage of Life The Voyage of
Life is "an allegory of the four stages of man: childhood, youth, manhood and old age" (Bertman, 2002). Each of the paintings shows the central figure riding the River
of Live in a small boat accompanied by a guardian angel and the series is clearly a Christian allegory (Bertman, 2002). Each of the four paintings also corresponds to
