the tale of Mrs. Wilson, who wages a battle against uterine and breast cancer, and loses. For a subject that is so grim, Jones uses extraordinarily flippant, even funny, language
to describe the situation; because of this, well examine the plot of the story paying particular attention to the writing style. Discussion Jones begins his story with a moment that
everyone can relate to, and which we all fear: the news that we have a serious health problem. In Mrs. Wilsons case, its terminal cancer, but she is already aware
of it and the diagnosis comes as no surprise. In the first paragraph, Jones conveys several things: the way in which we take refuge in trivialities to avoid dealing with
terrible pain; Mrs. Wilsons slangy and breezy way of expressing herself; and her acute powers of observation, particularly when it comes to the doctor. She wonders how often he has
to deliver this kind of news, and concludes that it could be as frequently as five times per day (Jones). She thinks: "It was the ultimate bad news, and he
delivered it dryly, like Sergeant Joe Friday. He was a young man but his was a tough business and he had gone freeze-dried already. Hey, the bad news wasnt really
a surprise! She ... knew. Of course, you always hope for the best. She heard but she didnt hear" (Jones 166). There are several things going on in this
