"The Great Gatsby." "The Great Gatsby" and most, if not all, of his literary work focused on a time period in American history which followed WWI. It was a time of change in all aspects of society and he was perhaps the one man who recorded much of the frivolous life of the people of the 1920s. One of his lesser known stories, "This Side of Paradise," offers us a look at this time period primarily through the development of one individual. The following paper summarizes the novel. This Side of Paradise "This Side of Paradise became popular in large part because it portrayed the habits and customs of the young postwar generation. The youths do little more than kiss casually, take an occasional drink, and treat their parents rudely, but in 1920 that was enough to brand them as rebels, even if no one was sure what they were rebelling against" (This Side of Paradise). In many ways this presents us with the foundation of "This Side of Paradise" but yet also provides us with a society that is changing around people like the main character, Armory Blaine, who is "a remarkably tame and impeccably moral young man who flies from the arms of a seductive chorus girl as if she were an agent of the devil. He even utters some high-sounding phrases about democratic socialism" (This Side of Paradise). However, his journey in the story, or his focus "is in pursuing two not entirely unrelated goals. Armory seeks to win the golden girl and to achieve recognition as a leader at Princeton" (This Side of Paradise).
