Paper Properly, Please The following paper discusses five different negotiating methods seen in the film "Thirteen Days." The methods discussed are psychological warfare, positional pressure tactics, attack,
appease, and * Psychological warfare: This particular method of negotiation was seen in one of the scenes wherein the quarantine was in effect and it appeared as though the
ships would move right on past the US ships. As one of the characters stated, it was a moment when they were essentially eye to eye, in a staring contest,
and someone blinked. This refers somewhat also to the game of chicken, which is a very common, human, psychological game. However, we can also see psychological warfare being used by
the Soviets when they insisted that the US was causing all of the problems and bringing the world to the brink of destruction. At this point they were illustrating how
they had no weapons in Cuba and it was the power hungry United States that wanted control and warfare. This plays on the psychology of the people and is often
a very powerful tactic. * Positional Pressure Tactics: According to the analysis of "Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In" by Roger Fisher and William Ury, "positional
pressure tactics...attempt to structure negotiations so that only one side can make concessions. The tricky side may refuse to negotiate, hoping to use their entry into negotiations as a bargaining
chip, or they may open with extreme demands." This was seen in the film when the second letter from Russia emerged and sent the US into a frenzy of confusion
