that have been able to resolve socio-economic problems through the democratic process of their governments. Results of utilizing democratic principles have had mixed results in many nations identified as
third world states. For instance, mixed results have been observed in Latin America, Asia and Africa while strong results and progress have been observed in China and India although
the model of democracy used in these nations does not necessarily adhere to the principles in other democracies. When discussing democracy, it is important to understand what this form
of government looks like, what it entails. As noted, democracy is a form of government wherein citizens of the state are empowered to form the government and also to initiate
laws and regulations by which the state will live. The government itself is comprised of representatives of the people who were elected by the people and are expected to follow
the will of the people they represent when voting on issues. In the U.S., democracy is described as a government "of the people, by the people and for the people"
(Monster Essays, 2007). Democracies in certain Third World countries is often described as procedural democracy (Monster Essays, 2007). This is interpreted to mean that democratic principles are minimally practiced.
