Research has confirmed the importance of establishing good health habits early in life, which has prompted the inclusion nutrition education as part of the third grade curricula. The following discussion outlines an assignment for a third grade class that has been studying health and nutrition in regards mental and emotional health; family and social health; as well as growth and development. This assignment will be the culminating activity for these lessons, demonstrating what the students have assimilated. The lesson assigning the diary project should begin with a class discussion in which the teacher explores whether or not the students are aware of what the word "diary" means. This discussion will establish background understanding of "diary" as meaning a written record in which the child writes about himself or herself. The teacher will indicate that they will write a particular kind of diary that lists what they eat or drink and in which they answer questions about nutrition and health. As this writer/tutor is not a teacher, the writer consulted the Internet to determine what would constitute a reasonable expectation of what third graders are capable of writing. Judging from an online example of an actual third graders diary (Forstadt, 2008), a third-graders natural inclination is to write brief, one-to-three sentence entries.
