students have a primary language other than English but they are competent English-speakers. Standardized testing from the previous year reflects a reading comprehension range of 2.2 to 3.5 grade level
equivalent. Teachers own reading level assessments reflect similar results. Two students, one boy and one girl, are identified with learning disabilities in reading, both are more than one year below
grade level in reading. They receive pull-out services from the special education resource teacher. Both students have auditory retention deficits. Both still have a b/d identification problem. Classroom materials are
modified to accommodate these students. Specifically, extra visual stimuli as well as additional aural instruction are provided for these students. Another student is identified as ADHD and is on medication
and receiving counseling, primarily for impulse control. This student is only four to five months behind grade level in any subject area. In fact, reading comprehension is at grade level.
Informal teacher observations reveal that all but two students are more visually-oriented than auditorially-oriented, i.e., they learn best when material is presented visually. This is common for this grade level.
All students also perform better when they are involved in activities. Again, this is common for this grade level. Description and implications of learning context The lesson on
weather will include: brief lectures, small group and large group work, LCD presentation and use of the Internet. The teacher will use the Internet projecting the image to a large
screen. Students will work individually and in pairs to create a weather timeline. The application setting is in the classroom initially with students having the knowledge and ability to translate
