else. The distinctions in how they conceptualize sociology are reflected in their nationality and the times in which they live and work. Two classical sociological theorists - Max
Weber (1864-1920) and Erving Goffman (1922-1982) - clearly bear this out. Max Weber was born in Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany on April 21, 1864, the son of a prosperous politician and
his equally politically connected wife.1 A sickly child, Weber pursued a study of economics, law, and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1882, but showed a definite lack
of initiative. He much preferred drinking with his friends to academic study.2 He moved to Strassburg for a year of mandatory military service, which profoundly influenced his later
thoughts on bureaucracy. Resisting the militarys attempts to transform men into machines, Weber returned to the academic sphere after his military service, and upon receiving his Ph.D. began teaching
law in Berlin. In 1893, he married his second cousin Marianne Schnitzer, and began teaching economics for a period. Suffering a nervous breakdown following the death of his
father, thereafter Weber became a hospital administrator, which obviously further influenced his thoughts on bureaucracy. Weber began to recognize the need for bureaucracy in society as a means of
ensuring organizational efficiency. He was later a German Armistice Commission consultant, and assisted in the drafting of the Weimar Constitution following the defeat of Germany in World War I.3
