an Igbo village in Africa. It is the story of this man, and other characters, as life essentially changes in the culture and society through many incidents. In relationship to
the main character, Okonkwo, he finds himself sent from his village and upon return finds that missionaries have altered and ultimately destroyed his way of life. However, there is another
character, Nwoye, Okonkwos son, who seemingly finds this new life of missionaries one that offers a new path that is encouraging and exciting. These two characters ultimately represent the two
sides to the notion of missionary influence on ancient cultures that will forever be changed through such involvement. The following paper first examines the book, and the foundations of the
work from the perspective of culture as it relates to the author, and then examines the two characters, Okonkwo and Nwoye. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
In this story the beginning starts with a description of Okonkwo and why he is the way he is. He is a man of
strength and man who highly respected in his culture. "He is driven by the desire to live down the reputation of his indolent, music- loving father" and proves successful in
doing so (Kingwood College Library). However, he accidentally kills another member of the tribe and is sent into exile for 7 years. In exile he lives, awaiting his time when
he can return, and proves relatively successful despite his position in exile. However, during his 7 years away the village has altered dramatically because of missionaries. "Okonkwo is unable to
adjust to the changes and tries to fight the new ways" but proves unsuccessful and ultimately goes against his traditions and culture in a way that is unheard of, through
