another until, upon returning home, he is finally defeated emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. The following paper examines how Achebes novel can be classified as a tragedy, based upon Aristotles definition
of tragedy. Tragedy and Achebee Tragedy In first examining Achebes novel we look at Aristotles view of tragedy as it involves the plot. One author notes that, "According
to Aristotle, tragedies where the outcome depends on a tightly constructed cause-and-effect chain of actions are superior to those that depend primarily on the character and personality of the protagonist"
(Outline of Aristotles Theory of Tragedy in the Poetics). When looking at Achebes novel this is an aspect that is very solid and powerful. The supposed protagonist in this play
is generally considered to be Okonkwo, despite the fact that the reader may not particularly like this man. The tragedy lies in the plot, the series of events that take
place and involve the demise of Okonkwo. In the beginning of the novel we see Okonkwo as a powerful and well respected man, even if we do not necessarily like
him. He is a man who holds to the laws of his people, he is strong and courageous, and he is fairly well defined. But events take place that gradually
cause the story to become a tragedy. It begins when Okonkwo follows the laws of his people, participating in the killing of a boy he has come to see as
a son. Then during a ceremony Okonkwos gun goes off and a boy is killed. The laws of his people demand that he be exiled. These two important events are
