primarily revolves around the main character, Okonkwo, and how he reacts to his native world, his world of exile, and the colonized world he sees upon his return to his
village. The following paper discusses and analyzes aspects of identity, culture, and colonization in Achebes novel. Recovering the Native The student
requesting this paper asks "in what ways was Achebes Things Fall Apart an effort to recover what is native in the African heritage." It is perhaps imperative to know, and
understand, that Achebe himself is a product of both the native and the colonized. He is a native but also a man who was raised with missionary parents as well.
His situation is unique, and his insight is real, as well as personal and truthful. In this respect one can see that the novel does offer the native heritage through
the characters, the traditions, the changes, and the evolution of a village. His novel brings the reader closer to the native in many
respects. For example, the reader learns of how the village people, the culture, deal with disruptions, breaking of the laws, while also presenting the reader with an understanding of their
traditions and practices. It may not really even matter if the details are incredibly accurate in light of the fact that they may include many different African cultures into this
one tribe. But, it is a novel that makes a cohesive environment that illustrates how the "native" existed and ho colonization altered various aspects of the native culture.
Achebes novel does not necessarily celebrate the native experience or culture any more than he does the colonized culture. He simply presents them as
