around the choices made by men. But in the character of Ezinma we are given a glimpse into the strengths, and weaknesses, of women in general. She represents the strengths
of the women of the tribe in that she is one who stands behind the rules and regulations, endeavoring to please despite what it does to her. This is the
condition of many, if not all, of the women in the tribe. Ezinma, prior to the contact with British people, is incredibly alive and full of passion. We see her
as a young woman who participates fully in the life that is part of her culture. She does not necessarily question it, but rather takes all the pain and the
joy in stride, understanding it to be nothing more than part of life. She is passionate and intelligent. She is one of those people who can endure some of the
most harsh conditions and yet still laugh and find the beauty in life. Even in her illnesses we see her strength. She does not complain unduly, and whine about how
she is being treated unfairly through the illnesses. She merely presents herself as one who will endure, even to death if need be. She follows the traditions and the culture
in order to adhere to rules that might save her strength and her health. She does not complain and she has faith in these people who are in control of
such things. This is truly an illustration of a great strength, especially considering she is an intelligent woman. It may well be that she has put aside any worry
or self concern when it comes to investigating what is wrong with her culture and their traditions. She may be weak in that, in pushing aside reality and hiding in
