been oral cultures. It was through the spoken word that people passed on relevant information. This orature was a tremendously valuable cultural component. It has only been
relatively recently in history that the focus has shifted to the written word. It might be contended, however, that in some ways the shift in focus to the written
word has actually served to preserve some of the oral tradition and even to emphasize its importance. Consider, for example, the work of renown African novelist Chinua Achebe.
Achebes "Things Fall Apart", in particular, is a tribute to African oral tradition. A native of Nigeria, Achebe is very in tune with
the various social and political issues that consume modern-day Africa, particularly the issues that have arisen because of colonialism. His writing reflects that awareness. "Things Fall Apart" is, in
part, a retelling of stories that previously have been told only in the oral format, arature that predate the introduction of the written word to Nigeria.
