other areas have no such mandate. And, with the recent growths in technology and medicine, there are many arguing that a mandatory retirement age should be lifted. In the following paper we present the argument that a mandatory retirement age should be in effect, based essentially on the reality that our country is run, economically and socially, on a system that requires us to have people in the retirement bracket. This does not mean that the mandatory retirement age should not be extended past 60, where it resides in most places today, but that a mandatory retirement age is essential in our country based on the system established long ago. Argument "Only a generation ago, retirement in rich countries went by the book. The book generally said that men were entitled to a pension at age 65, women sometimes earlier," with most people working diligently on, with the reality being that "In 1970, in most OECD countries 70-80% of men aged 60-64 were still at work" (Anonymous A gradual goodbye: if people are living longer, they will have to work longer too, 1996; p. S5). Over twenty years later that proportion has been cut in half. The other half of that number "quietly taken early retirement, often at their employers suggestion.
