A 20 page paper critiquing a therapy session with Rose, a concerned mother of a preschooler. Rose has approached Dr. Berenson for assistance with the problem of her five-year-old daughter waking during the night and expecting to spend the rest of the night with her mother. Dr. Berenson barely acknowledges the issue at hand, and never once does he offer Rose any practical, workable advice. Neither does he inform Rose that her problem is a common one, and that at her daughter's age it is approaching the point of curing itself. He interrupts Rose repeatedly. He does not listen, and he is impatient to gain control of both Rose and the session, not for the purpose of truly helping Rose, but more as a venue in which he can address his own needs for self-importance. people struggle with life problems rather than seek out help in identifying other ways of dealing with them. Alcoholics Anonymous is famous for, among other things, repeatedly giving this
advice: it is unreasonable to continue doing the same things day after day while expecting different results. The message is that for situations to change, the individuals involved need
to change the manner in which they deal with the causative issue. When an individual has the courage to seek out professional help in dealing with a matter that
the individual sees as being problematic, the counselor sought out needs to respond responsibly. Unfortunately, for every good counselor who offers strategic options
for individuals and who can effect real and lasting change in the clients life, there seem to be many more who would have served humanity much better had they pursued
other vocations. The counselor here appears to have good intentions, but not a clue of how to translate those good intentions to valuable advice for his client. Introductory Questions
