of freedom from critical examination. We know that animals will not judge us and we are inherently drawn to them for the simple joy they can bring. In light of
these facts it seems quite obvious that animals have the ability to really help people in many different ways. Therapy animals can help the disabled, both physically and mentally disabled,
as well as the elderly. The following paper examines how animal therapy can affect people physically, socially and mentally. Animals and Therapy "Animals can give us joy on
many levels-helping us to forget our worries and pains, better connect with those around us, and enjoy the simple act of being alive" (Schulte, 2005). Because animals often produce positive
effects in patients and individuals in need, the medical profession has become more and more open to incorporating animal therapy in patient care. It provides physical as well as emotional
therapy, and also helps people interact with one another, a reality that is, for some, rarely experienced (Schulte, 2005). For example, with many elderly people they have very little
social contact with others. They may be lost in their own world because they are essentially put into a retirement home and left to die. They make contact with the
animal, with the owner or trainer of the animal, and perhaps with other people in a retirement center. It brings them out of their shell and allows them the ability
