Touch is one of the most intimate communication forms. Touch can also be one of the most effective approaches to healing. Therapeutic touch, that discipline that encompasses such
alternative approaches to medicine as massage, acupressure, and acupuncture relies on the fact that the human body maintains an integral energy field. Therapists who utilize touch integrate their energy
field with that of their patient. The various subdisciplines which fall within the larger categorization of therapeutic touch all approach their patient somewhat differently but each relies on the
existence of the energy field of the human body. Acupressure/Acupuncture is a particularly interesting field of therapeutic touch. The acupressure therapist most
commonly refers to the existence of pressure points in relation to the performance of his or her work. Pressure points in the human body are most often defined in
two separate but related ways. The first definition of pressure point relates to the circulatory system. Under this definition a pressure point is a location where an artery
is close to the surface of the skin and blood flow can be stopped or restrained with the addition of pressure. The second definition of pressure point relates to
the bodys nervous system. Pressure points under this definition are those locations in the body where applying pressure results in specific sensations. These sensations can either be painful
or result in the reduction of pain which the body is already experiencing. Pressure points can be defined in a third way as well, that way relates to the
