two decades. The assumption of the practice is that the healing energy that can be transferred through touch can serve as an important component in the overall healing process of
an injury and the ways in which a patient responds to conventional treatments. In a very recent article in the popular consumer publication U.S. News & World Report (08-05-02), Boyce
notes that research at the University of Montreal suggests that: "Humans may be hard-wired to enjoy a caress, say scientists who have found nerve fibers linking soft touches to the
brains emotional center" (pp. 52). Such "wiring" can be thought of as an integral component of human physiology that means that it is also related to how the human body
heals and regenerates itself. Taken a step further then, therapeutic touch in nursing may have the potential to enhance the overall healing process and assure that all components involved in
the healing process are fully addressed. It is worth noting that therapeutic touch was originally developed in the early 1970s by Kunz and Krieger. Dora Kunz was a non-medical
