Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. The tremendous need for therapeutic soft contact lenses finally brought about the first of its type in the early 1970s when the FDA approved its limited use in humans. Interestingly, this first prototype proved a better optical tool for veterinary use than its intended bipedal population. The most important use for these initial therapeutic soft contact lenses – also called bandage lenses – was to treat corneal ulcers; since that time more than thirty years ago, TSCLs have been proven to address such areas as cornea protection, pain relief and healing enhancement. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

a better optical tool for veterinary use than its intended bipedal population. The most important use for these initial therapeutic soft contact lenses - also called bandage lenses -
was to treat corneal ulcers; since that time more than thirty years ago, TSCLs have been proven to address such areas as cornea protection, pain relief and healing enhancement (Khan
et al, 1989; Lim-Bon-Siong et al, 1998; Karlgard et al, 2004). Since that time, as well, the lenss overall variety and availability has
grown with its popularity (Anonymous, 2002); depending upon water content, lens thickness and polymer chemistry, the DK - or oxygen permeability - is established as a means by which to
treat the corneal problem. For example, when the lenses are comprised of lower water content, coupled with steeper base curves and less movement, it tends to bring about corneal
swelling. Other beneficial criteria of bandage lenses includes providing a mechanical barrier over the injured cornea so as not to feel the clipping force of the lid; speeding up
delivery of medication to the anterior segment; potentially increasing lubrication therapy; and supplying a splinting effect (Ryan, 1999), all of which illustrate how a critical component to the benefit of
therapeutic soft contact lenses is how it aids in the treatment of infectious corneal ulcers by way of supplying protection to the delicate, mending corneal epithelium (Kabat et al, 1999).
"Though used as a non-traditional bandage in human ophthalmology, veterinarians have found TSCLs very effective in treating their patients who do not have the same self-control as the human
patient" (Keragenix, 2004). Utilizing soft contact lenses in a therapeutic way is not as new as thirty years ago; rather, ancient Rome employed
