skin surface warming on shivering." AORN Journal July 2007: 113+. General OneFile. Web. 29 Aug. 2011.
While the objectives of patient temperature control in the operating room environment can vary quite radically, there can be specific benefits to induced mild hypothermia in specific cases.
Shivering, the natural physiological reaction to a reduced body temperature, however, interferes with the desired effect because it results in an increase in body temperature. This study defines mild
hypothermia and illustrates how shivering, and thus core body temperature, can be regulated with a combination of drugs and body warming.
Involving only eight participants, the study is limited in the number of participants. The researchers effectively demonstrate, however, that meperidine (an opioid which in part acts to stave off
shivering when administrated intravenously) is most effective when accompanied by skin warming. The researchers found that the administration of the opioid alone
reduced the shivering threshold to 93.2 degrees F. This approach had a negative connotation, however, in that it necessitated high plasma concentrations to be effective. The necessity to
administer higher levels of this drug had the adverse effect of unacceptable levels of respiratory depression and sedation. Skin warming alone, accomplished with the use of a mattress that
