In 1960, Douglas McGregor put forth a theory of management that has had a profound effect on both management thinking and practice. His propositions sum up
the precepts of a unitary and normative frame of reference for practices in management across the world. His Theory Y principles have been the subject of management training courses for
years; they have also influenced the design and implementation of practices and policies within the personnel arena. McGregor may have had more influence on management than any theorist before or
since because his theories permeate the axioms of participative management and personnel appraisal (BOLA, 1999). McGregor defined the assumptions he believed to be underlying the practice of managers in
relation to employees. He determined these stances were observable in their conversations and in their actions. He then went on to call the two major propositions Theory X and Y.
McGregor believed that managers manifested one of these two theories in their policies as well as in their relationships (McGregor, 1960). McGregors ideas followed along Maslows need satisfaction model
for motivation. According to Maslow, an individuals needs provide the driving force for motivation. Related to work, Maslow suggested that worker dissatisfaction was due to poor job design, few opportunities
to gain job satisfaction and the managers behavior toward him. Maslows thoughts about drives and motivation resulted in a classification of needs that related directly to the development and the
behaviors of any person. As lower level needs, such as basic survival, were satisfied, the person would develop towards higher level needs, such as social or intellectual needs. This has
