The series consists of fiction and non-fiction trade books and an anthology, all of which connect to themes. The following lesson uses Harcourt Brace Signatures Series for Grade 2. The story is entitled This Is The Way We Go To School. * Setting the stage: Teacher asks students how they travel to school? Write the different ways on the white board or chart paper. Next, ask children if they can think of other ways to travel to places and write these on the paper. * Teacher then shows children the globe and announces they will be reading about how children all over the world travel to their schools and ask if they might think of some ways? * Using the Big Book, teacher and class "walk" through it, with the teacher naming the mode of travel on each picture, e.g., trolley, cable car, ferry. * Before reading, tell children to see if they can learn other ways to travel as the story is read. Teacher then reads story.
