on aging, it is valuable to consider central elements of the Continuity Theory, its development, evidence that justifies the theory, and the application of the theory in light of conflicting
concepts, including disengagement. The Continuity Theory was developed as a result of assessments of major changes in the population of elderly Americans and the belief that even in the
midst of changing, functioning and social elements, this increasing population of elderly Americans demonstrate consistency in terms of their conceptual perspectives, their activity levels, lifestyle and relationships (Atchley, 2002).
In fact, though, theorists have also recognized that the continuity does not suggest stasis, but instead continuity is based on an integration of flexibility that is allowable through a foundation
of strong interpersonal relationships, anticipated behaviors and social connections (Atchley, 2002). Continuity theory is based on a substantial assumption that most people, throughout their lives, are able to
live, learn and grow from their experiences, and that they are able to evolve in a manner that is in correspondence with their desires (Atchley, 2002). At the same
time, this learning takes place within a consistent personal base, and continuity in conceptual perspectives and lifestyles are an imperative part of the process of adult development from the period
of mid-life to the later years of life (Atchley, 2002). In fact, Atchley (2002) argues that continuity is the most substantial strategy that adults utilize to cope with major
life changes that occur from middle to later life, and that continuity provides a basis for accepting natural changes that come with aging. The Ohio Long-Term Care Research Project focused
on the creation of the Ohio Longitudinal Study of Aging and Adaptation, which consisted the changes in Americans over the age of 50 in a 20 year study (Atchley, 2002).
