There are a number of ways in which cognitive psychology can give an insight into what could be termed the mysteries of the mind and
to a great extent both normal and abnormal cognition has been able to be mapped and analysed by psychologists. There are various aspects of cognition which can be investigated from
a scientific perspective and in this way researchers are able to gain a much clearer picture of cognitive processes in general and the cause and nature of specific disorders in
particular. The student could therefore look
at a number of different aspects of the cognitive process and assess how far they give a complete account of the way in which cognition is related to behaviour. Vision,
for example, is considered to be an important foundational basis to the process of cognition, and it is possible to construct cortical maps which include retinal topography and represent the
conjunction between visual input and the organisation of complex behavioural patterns. Studies which have compared the higher cognitive process in sighted and blind people would therefore give an indication of
the importance of visual stimuli in the way in which cognition analyses data.
Stepnisky (2001) notes that theorists such as Fodor maintain that cognition works on a modular system, in that perception is modular whereas
